Weekly News Blast - July 22, 2020

Tentative Re-Open Plan (Updated) As it currently stands, schools in Mississippi will be expected to resume this fall. The SCCSD will now open on August 10, 2020 (this is a change from the original date of August 6th). The tentative plan will be to divide each school’s student population in half. One half will report on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the other half reports on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A group of students from the 4 days will report on Fridays based on needs. While students are away from school, they will be working virtually on assignments from their on-site days. Group determinations are currently being made, with consideration of families. Parents will be notified of the specific days. Children in the same houses are being grouped together. More information will be forthcoming as the plan is further developed. Feel free to contact us with questions/concerns (sccsdmedia@sunflower.k12.ms.us).
Safety in Re-Opening As a district, we recognize that implementing safe measures is of the utmost importance in mitigating the risk of Coronavirus. Funds are being utilized to purchase cleaning items and equipment, and staff are being trained on cleaning methods, as this will have to occur daily, several times each day. Classrooms, buildings, and buses are being set up for social distancing and cleaning.
Masks (School Uniforms) The Sunflower County Consolidated School District Board of Trustees voted to make masks part of the school uniform for the upcoming school year. Please begin preparing for this now!
Technology Protection Measures and Internet Safety Policies The COVID-19 pandemic has forced districts across the country to implement virtual learning opportunities in an effort to continue learning in the event of future shutdowns. COVID-19 Mythbusters With so much information regarding the Coronavirus, unfortunately, there is also an abundance of misinformation as well. Check out this week’s myth and factual response! Myth: Heat (through sunlight and ingesting hot foods/liquids) keeps COVID-19 away. Fact: You can catch COVID-19 no matter how hot or sunny the weather is. Sunbathing or being outside in the heat and fresh air may feel better, but neither provides protection from the virus. Hot peppers or hot liquids may be delicious, but they do not cure or prevent COVID-19. The best prevention continues to be practicing social distancing, washing/sanitizing your hands regularly, and wearing a mask when in public.
